Force Feedback
Imagine a tool with 2 nanometer resolution that is controlled by a joystick and answers with the corresponding force feedback. Manipulating small objects manually becomes very intuitive, because the operator uses his/her own senses for controlling the stage. The forces applied to the tool tip can be so high, that even imprints in diamond surfaces can be produced.
Force Feedback NanoManipulators
Force sensors are used for automatic tip approach, to expand manipulators as micro tensile machines, or in closed loop operation with a Force Feedback Joystick. Feel the hardness of microparts in your hand.

This device was made with three NMT modules, a calibrated force sensor and a Force Feedback Joystick. The force sensor between the manipulator and the sample allows the ability to apply or measure calibrated forces in the mN range by moving the actuator within some 100nm. Values like friction forces, glue stiffness, breakage limits or elastic constants of microparts can be determined in high resolution. The force sensor can also be assembled between a Z-axis and a NanoGripper. Calibrated snap-in forces can then be applied.
The sensors are sensitive enough to give the operator a strong feedback signal, when a few mN are applied. The Force Feedback Joystick can induce forces into the hand of the operator between 0 and 10 N. This range can be scaled to the force range of the tip by software. The operator feels the hardness of a surface in his hand, when he/she tries to push the tip into a surface. A hard sample hits back at the moment the tip collides with it. A soft sample increases the force slowly when the tip moves into it.

If the above setup is mounted into a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), very small objects can be manipulated. Small plastic bubbles filled with ink can be pierced with a NanoManipulator and the operator controlling the tip can feel the elastic resistance of the bubbles when he/she moves the joystick. This information can be used to optimize the production of carbon copy paper.
